Tree Service in Groveland, FL

Groveland started as a turpentine camp in the pine woods and took its name from the citrus groves around it. Today it is one of the fastest-growing cities in Lake County, and the pines, oaks and old grove trees are still here.

Groveland Tree Service from Lake David to the Pine Woods

Groveland began as Taylorville, a turpentine still that brothers T.M. and C.C. Taylor set up along the railroad in the 1890s after freezes hurt the citrus business. Elliott Edge later bought them out and laid out a town, and residents eventually renamed it Groveland for the citrus groves to the south and east. Citrus ruled here for about fifty years, until freezes from the 1940s through the 1970s knocked it back.

The city sits where SR-50 meets SR-19 and SR-33. Downtown slopes down to Lake David, where Lake David Park has boat ramps, a fishing pier and a boardwalk through the wetlands. Groveland more than doubled in size between 2010 and 2020, and in 2023 it became the first International Dark Sky Community in Florida. New neighborhoods have spread out on all sides, but the native pine woods that started the town are still around, sometimes right at the edge of a backyard.

Groveland Pine Tree Removal and Native Pine Woods

Pines are the defining tree here. Longleaf and slash pines stand on undeveloped land between subdivisions and along lot lines, with turkey oaks and scrub oaks underneath. Pines usually fail by snapping in high wind or toppling in wet ground, and a dead or beetle-killed pine can drop its top without warning. That is why so much of our work in Groveland is pine tree removal, priced on the same size scale as any other tree: about $350 to $850 under 30 feet, $850 to $1,800 from 30 to 60 feet, and more for tall pines near houses.

The soil is mostly well-drained sand on the higher ground and darker, wetter soil near Lake David, Cherry Lake and the lower wetlands. Pines on the wetter sites have shallower roots and go over more easily in long rainy spells. Old groves that were left to grow up also leave behind dead citrus and tangled brush, and our citrus tree removal work usually goes hand in hand with clearing.

Dry spring weeks are when pines get into trouble here. A drought-stressed pine attracts bark beetles, and once they move in, the needles turn from green to straw to rust in a matter of weeks. Neighboring pines can follow. If you notice a browning crown, pitch tubes on the bark or fine sawdust at the base, call before summer storms arrive. A dead pine dries out and gets brittle fast, which makes it more dangerous to climb the longer it stands.

Land Clearing and Stump Grinding in Groveland

With so much new building, land clearing is a big part of our Groveland calendar, for pools, outbuildings, fence lines and whole infill lots. Pine woods with lots of scrub oak usually clear at the lower end of $1,800 to $6,500 or more per acre, while thick brush and old grove ground cost more. After clearing or removal, stump grinding runs about $95 to $450 a stump depending on size; big pine stumps grind quickly, and old oak stumps take longer.

City of Groveland Tree Rules

The City of Groveland has its own land development code, and it treats tree removal tied to new construction differently from a homeowner removing a single tree. We were not able to confirm the city's current permit thresholds from public sources, so we check with the city on every estimate before any removal or clearing. Parcels just outside city limits along SR-19 or SR-33 fall under Lake County, which offers an exemption for occupied single-family lots of two acres or less, with limits. Florida Statute 163.045 also applies: if an ISA certified arborist or Florida licensed landscape architect documents that a residential tree is a danger, no local permit, fee or replanting can be required. Trilogy and other HOA communities need board approval on top of that.

Tree Trimming for Groveland Subdivisions

In the newer neighborhoods, the issue is usually young trees rather than old ones. Builders often plant live oaks and laurel oaks a few feet from the driveway or the house, and in ten years they are scraping gutters. Early tree trimming and pruning to pick one main leader and raise low limbs keeps those trees from becoming removal jobs later. Most small and mid-size trees here fall at the lower end of the $175 to $900 per-tree range.

Groveland Tree Trimming Near SECO and Duke Lines

SECO Energy has been building out its system in the Groveland area, and Duke Energy also serves parts of town, so the provider depends on your address. Your bill will show which one. Downtown, overhead lines run through older oak canopy, while newer subdivisions are mostly underground. We keep service drops clear and leave main lines to the utility.

Storm Cleanup in Groveland

Big pines are the trees that come down most often here after a hurricane, and when they do, they tend to land across driveways and roofs. Our storm damage cleanup crews start with trees on houses and blocked exits, then move to yard cleanup. We photograph damage for insurance before cutting.

Questions

Groveland Tree Service Questions

The City of Groveland has its own land development code, and it treats single-tree removals by a homeowner differently from clearing tied to new construction. We were not able to confirm the city's current thresholds from public sources, so we check with the city before every Groveland removal. If an ISA certified arborist or Florida licensed landscape architect documents a residential tree as dangerous, Florida Statute 163.045 removes the permit and replanting requirement.

Groveland was built in pine woods, and many houses still have tall longleaf or slash pines near them. Pines carry their weight high, and in strong wind they either snap or tip over in wet ground. Trees left standing alone after nearby land was cleared are more exposed than they used to be. Dead or beetle-damaged pines are the biggest risk. A pre-storm check can catch the ones that should come down.

The town started in the 1890s as Taylorville, a turpentine still set up along the railroad by the Taylor brothers. Turpentine came from tapping living pines for sap, so the business depended on the longleaf pine woods around town. When citrus took over, residents renamed the town Groveland. You can still find old pines with scarred trunks in some wooded parcels around the area.

Yes. Trilogy is a gated 55+ community in Groveland, and most of our work there is palm trimming, pruning builder-planted oaks and removals that the HOA has approved. Like most planned communities, it has rules about tree removal and replacement, plus gate access to plan for. We can provide a written scope for the board. Once approved, we schedule around community rules and clean up fully.

Yes. Cherry Lake is part of the Clermont Chain of Lakes, and lots along Cherry Lake Road and the Estates at Cherry Lake have wetter soil than the sandy ridges. You find water oaks, laurel oaks and cypress near the shore, and they are more prone to root problems and uprooting in long wet spells. We check root flare and lean, and bring mats to protect soft lawns.

Light clearing in pine woods with scrub oak usually runs about $1,800 to $6,500 or more per acre, depending on tree density, sizes and whether stumps are ground or removed. Thick brush and old grove land with dead citrus cost more. We walk the property with you, mark what stays, and give you a flat written price. Ask the city or county about any clearing permit tied to construction first.

Both serve parts of the Groveland area. SECO Energy has been expanding its system here, and Duke Energy also has customers in town. Your bill will tell you which one you have. That matters for any tree near the lines, because only the utility can work on main lines. We can trim around the service drop to your home once it is safe, and we coordinate with the utility when needed.

Groveland is about fifteen minutes west of Clermont on SR-50, so we can usually reach it the same day for trees on houses, vehicles or blocking driveways. The emergency line is open around the clock, and after-hours work carries a premium that we tell you about before starting. We photograph damage for insurance, make the house safe, then come back for full cleanup.
