Tree Service in Winter Garden Around Plant Street and Lake Apopka

Winter Garden sits at the west edge of Orange County, where the West Orange Trail runs right down the middle of Plant Street and the downtown still follows the grid laid out around the old rail depots and citrus packing houses. The city incorporated in 1908, and its downtown historic district is one of the better-preserved main streets in Central Florida. To the north, Lake Apopka, the fourth-largest lake in the state, forms the city's long northern shoreline, with Newton Park giving residents a public spot on the water. We drive over from Clermont on SR-50 or Florida's Turnpike, so it's a short run for our crew.

That mix of old and new is what shapes the tree work here. Close to downtown, lots are small and the oaks are big. Out toward Daniels Road and SR-429, homes and trees are younger, but plenty of those trees were planted too close to a foundation or pool cage.

Winter Garden Tree Care Depends on the Soil Under It

Ground conditions change quickly in this city. Near the lake, soils tend to hold more water and organic material, a reminder that much of the land along the Lake Apopka shore was farmed as muck for decades. Roots in soft, wet ground spread wide and shallow, and a tree that looks solid in a dry spring can tip over with its whole root plate after a week of summer storms. Moving south toward Tildenville and the Lake Butler side of town, the ground gets sandier and drains fast, which is easier on equipment but harder on trees in a drought.

The tree stock follows the city's history. Live oaks shade the older streets and are usually worth keeping with good pruning. Laurel oaks were planted heavily in the middle of the last century, and many are now hollow at the base or shedding big limbs, which is why we write about why laurel oaks fail in Central Florida so often. You'll also find camphor trees that seeded in on their own, sabal palms, crape myrtles, and a fair number of leftover citrus trees in backyards that were once part of a grove.

Winter Garden neighborhoods and corridors we cover

  • Historic downtown and Plant Street — mature oaks on tight lots with alleys and parked cars, so we rig limbs down in pieces with small equipment.
  • Lake Apopka shoreline and the Newton Park area — open-water wind and wetter soil, so root-plate failures and leaning trees are the main concern.
  • Tildenville and the Tucker Ranch area — older, larger lots with big oaks, overgrown fence lines and the occasional dead citrus row.
  • Stoneybrook West — gated golf-course community where HOA approval, pool cages and palm trimming drive most of the work.
  • Black Lake area — lakeside lots where cypress and oaks lean toward the water and debris has to be carried out, not dropped in.
  • Daniels Road and the Winter Garden Village corridor near SR-429 — newer subdivisions with young trees crowding foundations, sidewalks and irrigation lines.

Winter Garden Tree Removal and the Jobs We See Most

The most common call in Winter Garden is a laurel oak that has started dropping large dead limbs onto a roof or driveway. Next is crown thinning on live oaks so a homeowner can keep the shade without the weight. After that come palm trimming before hurricane season, stump grinding after a do-it-yourself removal, and clearing out citrus that died years ago from greening and was never pulled. Homes backing onto the West Orange Trail add a wrinkle, since limbs over the trail have to come down without blocking walkers and cyclists.

Winter Garden Tree Permit Rules We Check First

The City of Winter Garden has its own tree permit process, separate from Orange County's. The city's current application is filed through its online BS&A permitting portal and points to City Code Section 114.73 for the removal criteria. It asks for at least two recent photos of each tree, a site plan showing the type, size and location of what's coming out, and a ribbon tied around every tree proposed for removal. For any non-invasive tree over 12 inches in diameter at breast height, an arborist report is required, and depending on the species, size and reason, the city may require mitigation, meaning replacement trees or a payment.

The application also states that the city will issue permits for hazard trees as allowed under Florida law, or the trees must be mitigated per city code. That ties into Florida Statute 163.045, which says a local government can't require a permit, fee or replanting to remove a tree on residential property when an ISA certified arborist or a Florida licensed landscape architect documents that it poses an unacceptable risk to people or property. Not every tree qualifies, and a healthy shade tree that you simply don't like usually doesn't. Rules get updated, so we check the city's current requirements on every Winter Garden estimate and tell you plainly what applies to your tree. Our permit guide covers the state law in more detail.

Haul-off is includedThe city's form notes a separate Solid Waste charge if you want the city to pick up a removed tree. When we remove a tree, cleanup and hauling are part of the written price, so you don't need that pickup.

Tree Trimming in Winter Garden Near Power Lines

Most of Winter Garden is served by Duke Energy, and the older streets near downtown have overhead lines running right through oak canopies. We don't cut within the clearance zone of energized lines. If a limb is touching or tangled in a primary line, we'll help you report it to Duke so their line crews can make it safe, and then we handle the rest of the tree.

Tree Removal Cost in Winter Garden, FL

A typical downtown laurel oak in the 30 to 60 foot range usually runs $850 to $1,800 to remove, with the higher end for trees that hang over a roof or have to come out in small pieces over a fence. Pruning a mature live oak usually lands between $175 and $900 depending on how much deadwood and weight reduction it needs. Grinding a single stump is often $95 to $450, and we'll quote stumps from an earlier removal even if we didn't cut the tree. If a tree comes down on a house at night or during a storm, after-hours work adds roughly 25 to 50 percent. Everything is written down before we start, and our tree removal cost guide explains what moves the number.

Winter Garden Tree Services We Offer

For dead or failing oaks, our tree removal crews take the tree down in sections and leave the yard raked. Shade trees worth saving get structural cuts through our tree trimming and pruning service, and Stoneybrook West homeowners keep us busy with palm tree trimming each summer. When an old grove tree in the backyard has finally died, citrus tree removal is quick and inexpensive, and stump grinding takes care of what's left so you can plant or sod over it.

Winter Garden borders several of the towns we work in every week. Just east, Ocoee shares the Lake Apopka shore and the same mid-century oaks, while Oakland sits a couple of miles west along the trail. To the south, Horizon West covers the newer villages off SR-429, and back home in Lake County we serve Downtown Clermont and Lake Minneola.

Questions

Winter Garden Tree Service Questions

Usually, yes. The City of Winter Garden runs its own tree permit through its online BS&A portal, with removal criteria in City Code Section 114.73. The form asks for photos, a site plan and a ribbon on each tree, plus an arborist report for non-invasive trees over 12 inches in diameter. Mitigation may apply. Florida Statute 163.045 can exempt a residential tree documented as an unacceptable risk. We check the current rules for your address on every estimate.

Not always. The 34787 ZIP code covers a lot of unincorporated Orange County, including most of Horizon West, where the county's tree rules apply instead of the city's. Your property tax bill or the Orange County Property Appraiser's site will tell you if the parcel sits inside city limits. If you're not sure, give us the address and we'll look it up before we quote.

Yes. Trail-side jobs are routine for us in Winter Garden. We plan the work so limbs are lowered on your side of the property line, set people at each end of the work zone to hold walkers and cyclists for a minute while pieces come down, and keep the trail clear of debris. If the tree itself sits on public land along the trail, it belongs to the public agency, and we'll point you to the right office.

Many are. Live oaks in the historic district can live for a very long time if they get structural pruning and their roots aren't cut up for driveways or utilities. Laurel oaks are another story; by the time they're 50 or 60 years old many have decay at the base. We'll tell you which kind you have and whether pruning, cabling or removal makes sense.

Soils near the lake hold more water than the sandy ridges to the south, so roots tend to stay shallow and spread sideways. After days of rain, that wet ground loses its grip and the whole root plate can lift. If you see a crack in the soil or a mound forming on one side of a leaning tree, call us soon. That is a sign the roots are failing.

Most single stumps in Winter Garden land between $95 and $450. Price depends on diameter, how much of the root flare sits above ground, and whether we can roll the grinder through a gate or have to carry equipment around a pool cage. Several stumps in one visit cost less per stump. We grind below grade and rake the chips back so you can fill and sod.

Duke Energy maintains clearance around its primary distribution lines, and that work is theirs to do. We won't cut within the clearance zone of energized lines. If a limb is on a line, report it to Duke first. Once the line is safe, we can handle the rest of the tree, including branches over the service drop to your house.

Yes. Cleanup and haul-off are included in every removal price we write. We chip the brush, cut the wood into manageable pieces or haul it away, and rake the yard. You don't need to schedule the city's separate Solid Waste pickup or pay its disposal charge for a tree we remove.
