Montverde Tree Service on the West Shore of Lake Apopka

The first American settlers arrived in 1865, calling the place West Lake Apopka, and it was incorporated as Montverde on May 18, 1925. Montverde Academy, open since 1912, still sits at the heart of town. From 1887 to 1969, the Tavares and Gulf railroad hauled grapes, citrus and vegetables out of here. Today CR-455 is the main road, and it is part of the Green Mountain Scenic Byway, which follows the southwest shore of Lake Apopka from Winter Garden through Oakland, Montverde and Ferndale.

The town has kept its small size and rural feel even as Clermont and Minneola have grown around it. Large lots, older homes and private estates set the tone, from the narrow streets near the academy to Bella Collina, a gated golf community spread over about 1,900 acres of lakes and hills off CR-455.

Tree Trimming in Montverde, FL for Big Old Oaks

Montverde has more large, old live oaks than most towns around here, many of them along CR-455 and the older streets near the lake. These trees are worth keeping, and most of what they need is trimming and pruning: removing deadwood, lifting limbs over driveways and roofs, and reducing weight on long horizontal limbs before they crack. Trimming a mature oak like this typically runs toward the upper end of the $175 to $900 range per tree, depending on size and how much needs to come out.

Old oaks with heavy limbs or weak unions can sometimes be kept with cabling and bracing. On a big live oak over a house, cabling ($350 to $1,200 per tree) is often a reasonable alternative to removing a tree that took a century to grow. Spanish moss, by the way, is not the problem many people think; it is not a parasite, and it rarely hurts a healthy oak, so we do not charge you to strip it out.

Montverde Soils, Lake Apopka and Why It Matters

The ground changes fast as you move through town. The hills above the lake are ridge sand that drains quickly, holding longleaf pine, turkey oak and old citrus ground. Down along Lake Apopka, the soil is darker and stays damp, with water oaks, laurel oaks, cabbage palms and cypress along the edge. A tree that sits through months of wet roots on the shore is more prone to rot at the base, and in a hurricane, saturated lakefront soil lets big trees uproot. We check root flare and soil conditions on every lakefront estimate.

Montverde Areas We Work In

  • CR-455 and the Green Mountain Scenic Byway - canopy oaks over the road and long driveways; careful pruning for clearance.
  • Around Montverde Academy - older in-town lots with mature oaks and palms close to homes.
  • Lake Apopka shoreline lots - wet ground, water oaks and cypress, plus wind off a very big lake.
  • Bella Collina - estate lots and golf-course frontage; mostly specimen tree care and HOA-approved work.
  • The hills toward Ferndale - more rural acreage with pines, scrub oaks and old grove land.
  • Minneola edge along CR-455 - where Montverde's rural lots meet newer subdivisions and lot clearing.

Montverde Tree Removal and Common Jobs

When a tree here does have to come down, it is often a big one. Tree removal on large oaks over long driveways and estate homes usually falls between $1,800 and $3,500 or more, and a crane may be the safest way to lift heavy pieces over a roof. Rural parcels also call for land clearing, mostly brush, pines and old grove trees. After a big wind event, our storm cleanup crews start with the trees blocking driveways on CR-455 and work from there.

Citrus Tree Removal on Montverde Grove Land

The railroad that ran through town hauled grapes and oranges for most of the last century, and plenty of Montverde acreage still carries the remains. Rows of dead or half-dead citrus stand behind older homes, often tangled with wild grape and volunteer camphor. Those trees host pests and break apart in wind, and they make it hard to use the land for anything else. Our citrus tree removal usually runs $150 to $500 per tree, with larger blocks quoted by the acre. If you are still deciding whether to replant, our post on what to plant after a removal covers species that handle this sand.

Town of Montverde Tree Removal Permits

The Town of Montverde has its own Application for Tree Removal Permit, listed with its other permitting forms, and its code is published on Municode. We have not been able to confirm the current criteria and fees from public sources, so we check with town staff before quoting any removal inside town limits. Parcels just outside town limits fall under Lake County rules instead. Under Florida Statute 163.045, if an ISA certified arborist or Florida licensed landscape architect documents that a tree on your residential property is a danger, the town cannot require a permit, fee or replanting for it. Bella Collina and other gated communities have their own HOA approval process as well.

Power Lines and Storm Prep in Montverde

Most of Montverde is in Duke Energy territory, though you should confirm on your bill, since SECO Energy also serves parts of Lake County. Many of the overhead lines along CR-455 run straight through the oak canopy, which is why outages here can last after storms. We trim private service drops and leave main lines to the utility. Before hurricane season, our guide to hurricane tree prep for Lake County homeowners lists what to check.

Questions

Montverde Tree Service Questions

The Town of Montverde has its own tree removal permit application, separate from Lake County. We have not confirmed the town's current criteria and fees from public sources, so we check with town staff before quoting any removal inside town limits. If your parcel is just outside town limits, Lake County rules apply instead. A residential tree documented as dangerous by an ISA certified arborist or licensed landscape architect is covered by Florida Statute 163.045.

Often, yes. Large live oaks are strong trees, and many problems can be handled with pruning: removing deadwood, reducing the weight on long limbs and clearing the roof. If the tree has two big trunks or a weak union, cabling can add support. We only recommend removal when there is serious decay or root damage. We will tell you honestly what we see and whether the tree can be kept safely.

Shoreline trees in Montverde take wind across miles of open water, and the soil near the lake stays wet. Saturated ground gives roots less grip, and constant moisture can lead to rot at the base. That combination means big lakefront oaks are more likely to uproot in a hurricane than trees on higher ground. We check the root flare, look for fungus and lean, and suggest thinning to reduce wind load.

Yes. Bella Collina's estate lots and golf frontage have mature oaks, palms and landscape trees that need careful work. The community has its own approval process for removals and major landscape changes, and gate access to coordinate. We can provide a written scope for your HOA and schedule around community rules. Most of our work there is pruning and specimen tree care rather than removal.

CR-455 is part of the Green Mountain Scenic Byway, and many homes along it have long driveways under arching live oaks. Over time, low limbs block trucks, deliveries and emergency vehicles, and deadwood drops onto cars. Pruning to lift the canopy and remove dead limbs every few years keeps the driveway usable without hurting the tree. We avoid topping, which ruins a live oak's structure.

Big oaks over homes or long driveways usually run $1,800 to $3,500 or more to remove, depending on size, how close the tree is to the house and whether a crane is needed. A crane adds about $600 to $1,800 but can be the safest and fastest option when heavy pieces have to go over a roof. We give you one flat written price on the estimate, with cleanup and haul-off included.

Most of Montverde is served by Duke Energy, but SECO Energy also serves parts of Lake County, so check your bill. It matters because only the utility can work near main lines. We can trim limbs around the service drop to your house once it is safe. If a tree or limb is resting on a line after a storm, call the utility first, then us.

Montverde is about fifteen minutes up CR-455 from Clermont, so it is well within our regular service area. For storm calls with trees on houses or blocking driveways, our emergency line is open 24/7. We photograph damage for your insurance before cutting, then make the structure safe and schedule full cleanup. For planned work, we can usually come out for an estimate within a few days.
