Oakland, FL Tree Service on the South Shore of Lake Apopka
Oakland is one of the oldest towns in Orange County, a Tree City USA community tucked between the south shore of Lake Apopka and Johns Lake. We prune, remove and clean up its oaks and pines just a few minutes east of the Lake County line.
Oakland Tree Service in One of Orange County's Oldest Towns
The Town of Oakland incorporated in 1887 and still feels like a small town, with about 3,500 residents counted in 2020. It sits on the south shore of Lake Apopka, and its southern boundary follows the north shore of Johns Lake, Florida's Turnpike and West Colonial Drive. Town Hall is on North Tubb Street, and a short walk away the West Orange Trail circles a small roundabout before heading east toward Winter Garden. The Oakland Nature Preserve, off Machete Trail, has a boardwalk that runs out to an overlook on Lake Apopka.
Oakland is the first Orange County town you reach driving east from Clermont on SR-50, so it's one of our quickest trips outside Lake County. The Turnpike passes along the town's south side too, which makes storm calls here a fast response.
Oakland Trees Between Muck Land and Sand Hills
The land around Oakland tells you a lot about its trees. To the north, the old farmland along Lake Apopka was part of what the town's history calls the Great Vegetable Region, worked on dark, wet muck soils that hold water for long stretches. South toward Johns Lake and the Turnpike, the ground climbs into the sandy hills that run on into Clermont, where water drains away fast. Trees on the wetter ground root shallowly and are prone to tipping. Trees on the sand dry out and are more likely to drop limbs in a dry spring.
The town's name fits its canopy. Live oaks and laurel oaks line the older streets, many of them big enough to cover a whole front yard. Slash and longleaf pines stand on the higher lots, and camphor and other invasive volunteers come up along fence lines and empty lots. Oakland has been named a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation for close to two decades, and the town's public works staff plant trees around town each year, so residents here tend to care about keeping good trees and replacing the ones that come out.

Oakland neighborhoods and areas we serve
- Historic town center near Tubb Street — older frame homes under wide oaks on the original town plat, where pruning over metal roofs is the usual job.
- West Orange Trail frontage — yards that back onto the trail, where limbs need to come down without blocking trail traffic.
- Oakland Heights — established neighborhood along Gulley Avenue with large oaks over driveways and fences.
- Oakland Pointe — small enclave of custom homes where specimen trees are often worth cabling instead of removing.
- Lake Apopka side near the Nature Preserve — wetter ground, leaning trees and wind off the open lake.
- Johns Lake north shore and the SR-50 edge — sandy lots with pines and turkey oaks, plus newer homes near the Turnpike.
Oakland Tree Removal and Common Jobs in Town
Pine work comes up more in Oakland than in most of west Orange. Big slash pines over a house are a worry in hurricane season, and pines killed by drought or bark beetles turn brittle within months, so we remove them before they come down on their own. Mature laurel oaks with hollow trunks are the other frequent removal. On the pruning side, homeowners ask us to raise oak canopies off metal roofs and clear branches from driveways for delivery trucks. We also clean up storm damage and grind stumps left behind by earlier removals.
Oakland Tree Ordinance and Permit Questions
The Town of Oakland has its own tree ordinance, and as a Tree City USA it's required to keep one in place. The town also expects developers to replace trees removed during construction. Town leaders have said publicly that the ordinance dates to the early 2000s and have asked staff to look at strengthening it after residents raised concerns about large trees lost to development, so the rules may change. The town keeps a tree removal permit form and an approved tree list with its Tree City materials.
For a homeowner, the practical step is to check with Town Hall before removing a sizable tree. Florida Statute 163.045 limits what any local government can require when an ISA certified arborist or Florida licensed landscape architect documents that a residential tree poses an unacceptable risk, but that exemption needs real documentation, not just a feeling that the tree is too big. We confirm the town's current requirements on every Oakland estimate and tell you plainly what you need.

Oakland Tree Trimming Around Power Lines
Duke Energy serves most of Oakland, and many older streets have overhead lines running through mature oaks. We stay out of the clearance zone around energized primary lines and let Duke's crews handle those. Once a line is clear, we prune the rest of the tree and can usually work around the service drop to your house with care.
Tree Removal Cost in Oakland, FL
Removing a tall pine in Oakland follows the same size ranges as any other tree: roughly $850 to $1,800 for trees between 30 and 60 feet, and $1,800 to $3,500 or more for the giants over 60 feet near a house. Cabling a valued oak usually runs $350 to $1,200. For acreage on the south side of town, light clearing typically starts near $1,800 per acre, and dense brush or a lot of large trees costs more. You'll get a flat written price with cleanup included before we start.
Oakland Tree Services From Our Crew
For tall pines near houses, our pine tree removal crew takes them down in controlled sections. Oaks worth keeping get our tree trimming and pruning work, and specimen trees with weak forks can be supported with tree cabling and bracing. After high winds, our storm damage cleanup team clears what came down, and land clearing handles brushy acreage near Johns Lake.
Oakland is right between Lake County and the rest of west Orange. Just west across the county line is Montverde, and Minneola and Downtown Clermont are a few minutes beyond. To the east, Winter Garden is the next stop on the trail.

Oakland Tree Service Questions
Oakland has its own tree ordinance and keeps a tree removal permit form, and the town has discussed strengthening its rules, so it's smart to check with Town Hall before removing a sizable tree. Florida Statute 163.045 can exempt a residential tree when an ISA certified arborist or Florida licensed landscape architect documents it as an unacceptable risk. We confirm the current requirements for every Oakland job.
To earn the Arbor Day Foundation's Tree City USA designation, a town has to maintain a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a community forestry budget and an Arbor Day observance. Oakland has held the designation for close to two decades. For you, it mostly means the town cares about its canopy and may ask questions about removing healthy trees.
Pines on Oakland's sandy southern lots get stressed by drought, root damage from construction, and lightning. Stressed pines attract bark beetles, and once beetles get in, the needles go from green to yellow to rusty brown within a few weeks. A dead pine turns brittle fast and can snap in a summer storm. If more than one pine is fading, call us so we can check the rest.
Yes. We plan trail-side work so limbs come down on your property, post people at either end to hold trail users briefly while pieces fall, and clear the path before we leave. If a tree is on the trail corridor itself, it belongs to the public agency, and we'll help you figure out who to contact.
Often, yes. The old farmland near the lake sits on muck soil that stays wet, so roots stay shallow. After heavy rain, a big oak or pine on that ground can lift its whole root plate in a wind gust. Signs to watch for include a new lean, cracks in the soil on one side, or roots lifting out of the ground.
Oakland is the first Orange County town east of Clermont on SR-50, and the Turnpike runs along its south side, so it's a quick drive for us. Our 24/7 emergency line covers trees on homes, cars and driveways. We photograph damage for insurance before we cut, and after-hours work carries a premium of about 25 to 50 percent, which we tell you up front.
If it's a live oak with a sound trunk, usually yes. Structural pruning, raising the canopy off the roof, and sometimes cabling can keep it safe for many more years. If it's a laurel oak with decay at the base, mushrooms, or large dead limbs, removal may be the safer call. We'll look at it with you and give you an honest recommendation.
Yes. We grind stumps whether or not we cut the tree. Most single stumps cost $95 to $450, depending on diameter, roots above grade and access to the yard. We grind below the surface so you can backfill and replant, and we rake the chips back into the hole or haul them off if you'd rather.
